Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Süleyman Köken stated that with the increasing popularity of obesity surgery in recent years, properly planned body shaping surgeries for excess skin and sagging in patients who have lost weight and reached their ideal weight through surgery contribute to their return to normal lives.
Stating that patients undergo a rapid weight loss process after obesity surgery, Op. Dr. Süleyman Köken said, “Due to rapid weight loss, a slimming of the body structure may occur. However, the skin that has expanded due to obesity does not tighten at the same rate, and as a result, excess skin and sagging may occur. This situation can restrict people’s social lives and create an aesthetically unpleasant appearance. At this stage, an aesthetic appearance can be achieved with properly planned aesthetic surgeries after obesity surgery.”
Statementing the importance of timing for body shaping and aesthetic surgeries following obesity surgery, Op. Dr. Süleyman Köken said, “For these surgeries, the patient must complete the weight loss process and maintain a stable weight for at least 6 months. The time to begin aesthetic surgeries after obesity surgery is generally at least 1.5 years.”
Stating that aesthetic surgeries planned after obesity surgery should be planned individually, Op. Dr. Süleyman Köken said, “While one surgery may be sufficient for some patients, others may need surgery in more than one area. Aesthetic surgeries that may be needed after obesity surgery are planned according to the problem areas of the body. These can be face, neck, arm, abdomen, leg and back lift surgeries, as well as breast aesthetics in women and gynecomastia operations in men.”
Stating that cosmetic surgeries performed after obesity surgery should actually be considered as a complementary treatment to obesity surgery, Op. Dr. Süleyman Köken said, “These surgeries are operations that help people who have lost weight to gain an aesthetic appearance. Cosmetic surgeries performed after obesity surgery should be considered as a part of obesity surgery.”
