Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Süleyman Köken answered frequently asked questions about liposuction, a procedure in which resistant fat deposits that accumulate in certain areas of the body after natural weight loss are removed using a device, thus improving body shape.
Is it possible to see results immediately after liposuction surgery? This varies depending on the area being treated. In areas with less swelling, such as the chin, arms, or legs, the results can be seen quickly. However, in areas like the abdomen, waist, and love handles, where a larger amount of fat is removed, there is more swelling, and therefore, it may take several months to see the results.
How long does the recovery process take after surgery? The recovery process varies from patient to patient and depending on the area treated. Complete healing requires waiting for the swelling to subside, which can take several months.
How much fat is removed during liposuction? The main goal of liposuction is not to make the patient lose weight and remove all existing fat. The aim is to contour the body by removing a certain amount of fat that remains in areas resistant to weight loss and that makes the body look shapeless. Therefore, the amount of fat removed is generally between 3-5 liters.
Which patients are not suitable for liposuction? We recommend mobilization (getting around) for all patients starting the first evening after liposuction surgery. It is not performed on patients who cannot do this, those with chronic illnesses, heart disease, circulatory system diseases, and those who are elderly.
Can you lose weight with liposuction? The goal of liposuction is not weight loss. However, depending on the amount of fat tissue removed, the patient may lose a few pounds. The patient may feel heavier after the surgery due to swelling. However, once the swelling subsides, the patient can see the difference more clearly.
Will there be pain after the surgery? Liposuction is a surgical procedure, and of course, pain can occur depending on the area treated and the length of the procedure. However, this pain is easily controlled with painkillers and does not significantly disrupt the patient’s daily activities.
Is the surgery permanent? Weight regain is possible after procedures performed as body contouring surgery. However, this regaining of weight, or thickening, occurs when the body gains a larger and more intense amount of weight. Unless there is excessive weight gain after liposuction surgery, we do not expect a recurrence of thickening, irregular shape, or fat accumulation in these areas.
What precautions should be taken after surgery? Significant swelling may occur in the areas where liposuction was performed after surgery. Drains are placed to reduce the swelling. We recommend intensive lymphatic drainage massage starting from the second or third day after surgery and continuing for the second or third month. We also strongly advise patients to wear a tight compression garment after surgery. The prescribed anti-swelling medication should be taken regularly. We recommend that patients start moving around quickly in the early stages, as this helps in the rapid reduction of swelling.
