Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Süleyman Köken provided information about abdominoplasty, a surgical procedure performed to correct sagging skin caused by excessive weight gain and loss, pregnancy, and aging.

Aesthetic Appearance

Stating that tummy tuck surgery is performed to correct excess sagging skin after severe weight loss and to achieve an aesthetic appearance, Op. Dr. Süleyman Köken said, “During pregnancy, the abdominal cavity swells significantly in some patients, and after pregnancy, there is relaxation in the abdominal wall and muscles. In these patients, abdominal muscle repair can also be performed along with tummy tuck surgery. The surgery usually lasts between 3 and 4 hours and is performed under general anesthesia.”

No Age Limit

Statementing that there is no specific age range for tummy tuck surgery, Op. Dr. Süleyman Köken said, “Even if our patients are between 18-20 years old, if they have experienced significant weight loss and there is noticeable sagging of the abdominal skin, the surgery can be performed. The same is true for older patients. Tummy tuck surgery can also be performed on patients aged 60-70 who do not have serious health problems.”

Postoperative Care

Statementing that patients generally stay in the hospital for one day after surgery, Op. Dr. Süleyman Köken said, “Patients can start eating 3-4 hours after the surgery and can walk with the assistance of a nurse. Postoperative care and dressings should be done promptly and correctly. We recommend that patients who undergo abdominal muscle repair along with a tummy tuck wear a corset for 2-3 months after surgery. After a tummy tuck, patients can return to their daily lives within 2 weeks, start light walking, and gradually perform household chores.”

Postoperative Scarring

Stating that they aim to minimize postoperative suture scars, Op. Dr. Süleyman Köken said, “We try to keep the scars that will form in tummy tuck surgery in the bikini area. In this way, the person can continue their life without being bothered by the appearance after the operation. We also recommend the use of creams and scar tapes that will help to reduce scarring after the operation.”
