Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Süleyman Köken stated that breast augmentation surgeries are performed not only for aesthetic reasons but also to address health problems, adding that breast augmentation surgeries are also applied in cases such as asymmetry correction, congenital breast diseases (tubular breast), and reconstruction after breast cancer.
Stating that breast augmentation surgery can be performed on all age groups without age restrictions, Op. Dr. Köken said, “Breast augmentation surgery can be performed in young people due to breast development disorders or insufficient volume, as well as in middle and older ages due to weight loss, pregnancy, or breastfeeding, and in cases of volume loss and sagging in the breasts.”
Emphasizing the importance of creating a personalized plan by listening to the patient’s expectations before surgery, Op. Dr. Süleyman Köken stated, “We pay attention to three fundamental issues in surgical planning. We plan details such as whether the prosthesis will be round or teardrop-shaped, whether it will be placed under or above the muscle, and the volume of the prosthesis, all on a case-by-case basis. Choosing the type and placement of the prosthesis according to the patient’s body structure and expectations is crucial for the process.”
Stating that breast augmentation surgery takes approximately one hour under general anesthesia, Op. Dr. Köken said, “Before surgery, the patient must be evaluated for anesthesia. It should be investigated whether the patient has any chronic illnesses that would prevent them from receiving anesthesia, and the medications they are using should be examined. Medications such as blood thinners, which may pose a risk to the surgery, should be discontinued one week before the operation.”
Stating that breast augmentation surgery can be performed in any season, but is generally recommended in winter considering the use of a compression garment, Op. Dr. Süleyman Köken provided the following information about the post-operative process: “We recommend wearing a compression garment for about two months after surgery to prevent the implant from shifting or slipping. The implant takes approximately 4-5 months to fully settle. Patients should avoid reaching up and down and lifting heavy objects in the first few weeks.
Sports that involve arm exercises and weightlifting should be avoided for 4-5 months after surgery. Additionally, driving should be avoided for 2-3 weeks, and the area should not receive any blows to the breast. Complete recovery from breast augmentation surgery takes approximately 6 months. Breast augmentation surgery involves a 3-4 cm incision under the breast. Because no tissue is removed, the scar heals better and is therefore almost invisible. However, to be on the safe side, we still recommend that patients use scar cream or scar patches in the second week.”
