Squamous cell carcinoma is another name for flat cell carcinoma. In this type of skin cancer, cancerous cells form in the squamous cells. It is usually seen on the lower lip, ear, and the back of the hand. Squamous cell carcinoma develops rapidly and appears on the surface of the uppermost layer of the skin.
Squamous cell carcinoma is characterized by tissue abnormalities that grow from within the crusted skin, usually brown or red in color. Brown spots on the skin are a significant symptom. These tissue abnormalities also affect the lips, causing them to dry out and crack. It can also cause white spots on the tongue and mouth.
Squamous cell carcinoma has several different treatment methods. These methods include total excision, cryotherapy, imiquimod application, radiotherapy, and, although not frequently recommended, electrocautery.
